You might also enjoy a trip to Villa Park, one of the country’s largest football stadiums, and home of Aston Villa, to cheer on your local team.

Nightlife: With such a large and vibrant student community, nightspots in Birmingham cater to the university crowds with student night specials in many local bars, pubs and clubs. Check out Broad Street and Brindleyplace to find the best local hotspots, or visit the trendy Digbeth Dining Club under the rail arches.

Shopping: Fancy a spot of retail therapy? The stylish Bullring shopping centre is home to Selfridges and many other major brands. The city’s Jewellery Quarter has the largest concentration of jewellers and specialist shops anywhere in Europe!

There is a big vintage and retro clothes scene in Birmingham, including regular vintage kilo fairs where you can pick up beautiful pre-loved pieces. Food and Drink: There is a huge Chinese Quarter in Birmingham, which is a must-visit spot for authentic Chinese cuisine, from the award-winning Chung Ying restaurant to the popular Min Min Noodle Bar. You’ll also find a selection of Japanese, Indian and Mediterranean food on offer here.

Enjoy the best of Birmingham’s amazing music and food scenes at Digbeth Dining Club, where you’ll find delicious street food with live music performances and DJs. Digbeth has previously been voted Britain’s Best Street Food Event.

Birmingham was also Cocktail City of the Year in 2018 and is consistently a top contender. Bourneville, just a 10-minute train journey from Birmingham, is home to Cadburys World – a must-see attraction for chocoholics.

Culture: If you’re looking for something a little different, expand your mind at Thinktank, the Birmingham Science Museum with over 200 hands-on displays. You can also take in a fantastic range of art and social history displays at the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, which is located in a Grade II landmark building. Ikon Gallery in Brindleyplace is a free contemporary art venue that’s popular among students.

Birmingham is home to a thriving African and Caribbean community, which is reflected in many of the city’s popular cultural events. Jamaica in the Square is an outdoor festival where British and Jamaican culture, music and cuisine meet and mingle. Simmer Down Festival at Handsworth Park pays tribute to the city’s diversity and iconic reggae scene. The Birmingham International Carnival, which takes place every two years, celebrates African-Caribbean culture, arts, food and entertainment.

Nearby attractions: London and Manchester are an easy distance from Birmingham by train, so you can treat yourself to a day out or meet up with old friends in the capital with no problem. Cotswolds and the Peak District are also relatively close, giving you a great choice of getaway destinations for your holidays or mid-term breaks.
